J.M Shelley...
Is a speculative fiction writer, poet, creative writing tutor and health-care writing practitioner with an allure for fairy tales, mythology, and psychology to convey, around mental health representation, language for experiences where language was absent before. (Particularly demystifying the foggy recovery process from Complex PTSD.) She focuses on stories & poems that combine all four elements, as well as dreaming of vivid worlds and hopeful possibilities.
Whilst studying her MA in Creative Writing & Teaching at Cardiff University she focused on narrative psychotherapy & poetry, questioning the methodology around health-care writing in communities and finding fairy tales & poems could help to explain the unexplainable - significantly contributing towards the process of complex trauma recovery in comparison to traditional talk therapies. She became determined, whilst exploring these topics, to use the imagination softly through her writing as a way to convey intricate and difficult truths, validating this often marginalized and silenced group - forming the heartbeat of her debut children's portal fantasy novel 'The Constellation Chronicles.' (Also inspired by our dark skies history & intertwining constellation mythology.)
Her work has been published in various journals, magazines, and anthologies. (Below is a list of publications.) Most recently she won the SCBWI Scholarship Award, the WOWCON 2020 award and was short-listed for the Write Mentor SM Program. Soon her poem 'Strange Situation Procedure' will be published in Lucent Dreaming's 10th issue (2021/2022). (Examining a case study with fairy tale elements to say the things too hard to speak.)
Currently she lives in Shropshire with her fiancé. Most days she can be found watching for signs in the stars, collecting ideas like a magpie, drinking too much tea & with messy ink scribbling across her journals - often adopting the neighborhood cats.
